Frequently Asked questions
Who do I contact with other questions?
Reach out to Rusty Richardson at rrichardson@cumberland.edu or (615) 547-1257, or use the contact form on this page. We are happy to help.
Will photos be taken at the event?
Yes. Photos taken at Cumberland University events are property of the University and may be used for future print, digital, or social media purposes.
Can I share my own Phoenix Ball photos and memories?
We would love to see them. You can submit past Phoenix Ball photos and memories through the Share Your Story form on our website.
Is there a safe way to get home after the event?
Yes. Your safety is important to us, and we are glad to offer a Safe Ride Home. Safe Ride vehicles are available near the valet station later in the evening.
Is parking available?
Yes. Complimentary valet parking is provided. Once you arrive at the valet tent, our team will take your car from there, and check-in is located just steps away.
I have a food allergy or dietary restriction. Who do I tell?
Please let us know as early as possible so we can share the information with our catering team. Email Rusty Richardson at rrichardson@cumberland.edu with any food allergies or dietary needs.
How can I become a sponsor?
We rely on our sponsors to help present this event each year, and we would love to have you involved. A range of sponsorship levels and benefits is available for both the Phoenix Ball and the Patrons' Party. Visit our Sponsorship Information page or contact us with any questions.
Is there an auction?
Yes. The Phoenix Ball features both a live auction at the event and an online auction. If you are unable to attend in person, you can still show your support by bidding online.
When and where is the Phoenix Ball held?
The Phoenix Ball is held each year on the campus of Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. The reception takes place in Baird Chapel, followed by dinner, the live auction, and dancing in the Phoenix Arena. Check the Tickets or About page for the current year's date.
What is the attire?
This year's Denim & Diamonds theme puts a sophisticated Western twist on gala style, inspired by the glamour of the CMA Awards. Guests are encouraged to embrace elevated Western fashion in whatever makes them feel their best. Whether you choose a formal gown or cocktail dress with sparkling accessories, a chic short dress, or dark designer denim paired with boots, a blazer, or a stylish Western-inspired jacket, the goal is polished, festive, and fun. Think rhinestones, turquoise, leather accents, cowboy boots, cowboy hats, and plenty of sparkle—where country charm meets red-carpet elegance.
What does the Phoenix Ball support?
The Phoenix Ball benefits the students of Cumberland University, founded in 1842. One hundred percent of net proceeds goes directly toward scholarships and tuition support for Cumberland students, including programs like Phoenix Promise and Cumberland Promise. Over the years, the Ball has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for deserving students.
How do I purchase tickets?
Ticket information for each year's Ball is posted on the Tickets page. Because the Phoenix Ball is a popular event that can sell out, we recommend purchasing early. If tickets are sold out, you are welcome to join the waiting list or contact us about availability.
What is the Patrons' Party, and do I need to attend the Ball to come?
The Patrons' Party is a smaller, more intimate companion event, usually hosted in a private home or venue for 100 to 200 guests. It is held separately from the Phoenix Ball on the calendar. Patrons' Party tickets are separate from Phoenix Ball tickets, and attendance at the Phoenix Ball is not a prerequisite for attending the Patrons' Party.
